SHiP Landlord & Commissioner Events 2024

SHiP has discussed for several years the idea of bringing together Landlords and Commissioners. We are delighted that on May 22nd in Leeds we held the first of 2 planned ‘Commissioner Events’. Generously sponsored by Devonshires Solicitors, this event brought together 40 commissioners from across the North and the Midlands and 20 RPs from across SHiP’s ‘north’ membership and management committee.

The day was very successful, looking at challenges, solutions and good practice and ending with a short drinks reception to enable networking.

The day was opened by SHiP member Jigsaw Homes, with Donna Kelly setting the scene' for the day. Speakers also included The National Housing Federation, Local Government Association, Together Housing and Rotherham and Stockport Borough Councils.

Delegates signed up to positive future networking and jointly seeking solutions to the range of issues identified, from funding, to monitoring, to appointment of new support providers/managing agents.

And on November 20th we held the same Event for our ‘South’ members and commissioners. The Event was kindly sponsored by Winkworth Sherwood Solicitors and Notting Hill Genesis, again a great success, and took place at the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith - itself a unique venue that added to the success of the event.

Speakers included an Opening Plenary from MHCLG, National Housing Federation and Local Government Association, moving to Sheffield Hallam University, where Professor Beatty presented the recently published ‘Supported Housing Review’ commissioned by MHCLG (Supported Housing Review 2023) and a good practice session by Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea on working in partnership.

Landlords and Commissioner delegates looked at the challenges facing the sector and then proposed some solutions-some simple, some very ambitious. These will be shared with all delegates and, importantly with MHCLG, with whom we hope to work closely to take forward these ideas over the coming months and years.

We thank all the speakers for generously giving their time- they set the scene for the day perfectly. And to all the delegates for such an engaging event. Delegates were keen to see the event repeated next year.
